Ipswich U20’s 17/09/07
Hi All,
On Sunday we had 4 players go to the Ipswich Under 20's
Championships - Zoe Camp, Jonathan Pettinger, Jonathan Cooke and Sophie
Daniels.
Zoe. 1 Win 3
Losses - Bronze. Zoe moved up a weight group over the summer and so this
was her first tournament at that weight. Her first contest was very even but
eventually went the way of her opponent with a small scoring Drop Seoi-Nage
(Shoulder Throw). Contest two saw Zoe do all the opening attacking, but during
one of these attacks she was countered by her opponent with a Tani-Otoshi
(Rear Dropping Throw) which turned out to be the winning throw. In contest
three Zoe was thrown early on in the contest and held. Zoe was visibly very
tired for in her last contest, but continued with good attacking judo, as she
had done all day. Whilst no score came from the attacks, her
opponent did pick up a penalty as a result of the pressure and this
was enough to give Zoe the win and a Bronze medal. This was one of Zoe's
strongest performances for some time and reflects the significant improvement
seen in training.
Jon P. 0 Wins
4 Losses. Jon elected to fight in both the Junior (12 - 15yrs) and Youth
(16 - 20yrs) sections of the Tournament. Jon didn't look his usual
sprightly self in his opening contests. In contest one he was thrown with a
Te-Guruma (Pick Up Technique). Jon seemed to wake up for contest two and put in
the opening attacks, but it was his opponent who got in the winning throw, with
a very nice Drop Seoi-Nage. After a couple of hours wait Jon was back on, this
time in the Youth Section. I had only entered Jon in the Youth section as a
taster of what life will be like in the future and had no real expectations of
him winning contests. In contest one Jon came up against a Black Belt and very
seasoned campaigner. Jon really raised his game in this contest and put in some
excellent attacks, but it was his opponent who eventually took the win right at
the end of the contest when he knocked Jon down and managed to get a hold on.
Contest two had a similar pattern to the first with Jon attacking, but it
was Jon's limited groundwork skills that let him down as he was turned over
during groundwork exchange and held. Jon showed his true ability in the
Youth section and fought really well.
Jonny C. 0
Wins 3 Losses - Bronze. With only 4 players in the group at least Jonny was
assured of a medal!!!! Jonny's opening contest was against a British Squad
player who showed just why he represents his country when he manoeuvred
Jonny onto a very nice Uchi-Mata (inner Thigh Throw) to take the win.
Unfortunately for Jonny contest two was over in a matter of seconds when he was
thrown by a very powerful Hiza-Kata-Guruma (Shoulder Wheel Throw). Jonny did
start to impose himself a little more in contest three and put in some attacks,
but it was his opponent who got in the winning throw with a Drop Seoi-Nage. I'm
afraid the opposition was just too strong for Jonny on the day, but I'm sure
with a run a dedicated training he can get back to some winning ways.
Sophie. 4
Wins 0 Losses - Gold. Sophie was under strict instructions to use this
competition as a training exercise in preparation for the National
Championships and to try out the things we have been working on in training.
Sophies usual weight group (U63kg) was combined with the one above (U70kg)
due to low numbers. Contest one was against a much shorter player which Sophie
does not encounter very often so it took a couple of minutes to figure things
out, but when she had, she took the win with a very nice Harai-Goshi (Sweeping
Hip Throw). Contest two saw Sophie work her groundwork magic when
she threw her opponent with Ko-Uchi-Gake-Maki-Komi (Inner Winding Hooking
Throw) and then manoeuvred her in to position to apply Juji-Gatame (Cross
Arm Lock), to take the win by submission. Contest three was against a player
who represented Great
Britain in last years Senior World Cup so
was likely to be a real test. However Sophie totally dominated the contest
and took the win in great style with a truly fantastic Tomoe-Nage (Stomach
Throw). Contest four only lasted a matter of seconds before Sophie threw
her opponent with a Drop Seoi-Nage to take another win and the Gold Medal.
Sophie was simply in a class of her own and provided a master class of judo for
all to enjoy - except for her opponents that is!!!
I am absolutely confident that regardless of results, all
our players went away from this tournament in no doubt at all, that hard work
in training really does pay off!!!
Regards,
Allen.
